Who This Is For

You know the feeling. Here's who we built this for.

This assessment is for adults who are still active, or want to be, and have started noticing their knees more than they used to.

  • You're noticing stairs and hills more than you used to, and you find yourself reaching for the railing.
  • Your knees are stiff first thing in the morning or after sitting through a movie, a drive, or a long meal.
  • You've been told it's "just arthritis" or "just age" and to wait until it's bad enough for a replacement.
  • You've cut back on the things you love: hiking, gardening, pickleball, walking the dog, keeping up with grandkids.
  • Your knee swells, clicks, catches, or "gives out" and you've started to worry about a fall.
  • You want a real answer about what's going on before you say yes to injections or surgery.
  • You're willing to do the work if someone shows you exactly what to do and why.
Probably not a fit if… You're looking for a quick massage, you're not able to travel to our office in Sonora, or you'd prefer a clinic where your care is split between aides and multiple providers. We keep it one-on-one.
Sound Familiar?

You've probably already tried most of this.

None of it is wrong. It just isn't a plan. Each of these quiets the symptom for a while without answering why the knee is unhappy in the first place.

Resting it

Feels better for a week, then the stiffness and weakness come back worse the moment you're active again.

Ibuprofen & ice

Takes the edge off so you can get through the day. It never once changed how the knee is loading.

A brace or sleeve

Helpful for support. Wear it long enough and the muscles that should be doing that job get even quieter.

Cortisone shots

Real relief for a few months. Then it wears off and you're right back where you started, minus a little cartilage.

Waiting it out

"Come back when it's bad enough to replace." Meanwhile you're giving up hikes and hills one at a time.

Getting you out of pain is step one. Step two is finding out why the knee got there: strength and capacity too low, inflammation too high, balance, a hip or ankle overloading it, too much or too little activity, nutrition, sleep. That's what we look for, and that's why it stays fixed.

Your First Visit

One hour. Here's exactly what happens.

You'll leave knowing what's wrong, what's not, and what to do about it. Most people also leave moving better than they walked in.

First

We listen

Your story, your history, what you've tried, and what you actually want to get back to. Not a 7-minute rush.

Then

A truly thorough evaluation

We watch you squat, step, balance, and walk. We check hips, ankles, and strength too. Patients tell us it's the most thorough evaluation they've ever had.

Then

Find the root cause

Not just "arthritis." Is it low capacity, inflammation, balance, an asymmetry, a habit? You'll understand it in plain language.

Then

Hands-on treatment + shockwave

Relief starts that day: manual therapy, your first at-home exercises, and a regenerative shockwave therapy session to kick-start healing in the tissue around your knee.

Finally

Your personal roadmap

No cookie-cutter program. A plan built for your knee and your goals, with a realistic timeline, so you know what it takes to get there.

See If You Qualify

Normally $350. $140 for qualified new patients.

Why Sonora Trusts Us

More than the standard PT visit. On purpose.

We've been the clinic people come to after the other options didn't work. Here's what's different.

Seen within about a week

Most clinics have you waiting 6+ weeks for an evaluation. We usually get new patients in within a week, because knee pain doesn't get better sitting on a waitlist.

Your therapist. Every visit.

No aides, no bouncing between providers, no re-explaining yourself. And no cookie-cutter programs. Your plan is built for your knee and your life.

Step 1 is out of pain. Step 2 is why.

Most PT stops when the pain stops. We keep going until we've found and fixed what caused it, so you're not back in six months with the same knee.

Everything under one roof

Pain relief, strength and resiliency, injury prevention, regenerative shockwave therapy, nutrition, functional medicine, personal training, group classes. Whatever your knee needs, it's here.

A team that actually talks

Your PT, trainer, and the rest of the team share notes and stay connected on your case. The left hand knows what the right hand is doing, for your benefit.

Not surgery-first

We share a building with orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine doctors. If you truly need them, we'll say so. Most of the people we see don't.

What To Expect

Where most of our knee patients are three months from now.

Not "managed." Not "maintaining." Out of pain, with the reason it started handled, and confident enough in your own knees that you don't need us anymore. Plenty of people choose to stay on for maintenance. That's their call, not a requirement.

  1. 1
    Out of pain

Hands-on care, regenerative shockwave, and the right exercises. The stairs stop being a negotiation.

  2. 2
    Root cause found and fixed

The strength, balance, inflammation, or habit that set it off gets addressed, so it doesn't come back.

  3. 3
    You're in charge again

You know your body, you know what to do, and you walk out more optimistic about your health than when you walked in.

Founder · Sonora's Arthritis & Joint Pain Specialist

Dr. Maggs founded Peak Performance Care in 2011 with a simple idea: healthcare shouldn't have to start with an injury, and it definitely shouldn't end with "wait for it to get bad enough." Fifteen years later, that's still the way the clinic runs.

She has spent most of that time working with active adults in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond whose knees, hips, and backs were told to slow down, and who didn't want to. Her approach is hands-on and whole-body: get you out of pain first, then find what's actually loading the joint wrong, fix that, and build back the strength and confidence to keep moving on your own.

She and her team have published research, contribute to Runner's World, Men's Health, and Health News, and are who local physicians send their own patients to when rest, medication, and injections haven't done the job.

"I hear it every week: 'my knee hurts, but I'm just getting old.' I have patients in their 80s with arthritis who hike. Age isn't the problem. The problem is usually fixable."

Common Questions

Things people ask before they book.

Still have a question? Our care coordinator will answer it on the call after you apply.

Do I need a referral?

No referral needed in California. You can come straight to us.

Do you accept insurance?

This assessment is a self-pay visit. We're a specialized one-on-one clinic, and that's a deliberate choice. Therapists at in-network clinics often have to see two or more patients per hour because insurance reimburses only a fraction of what's billed. That means the insurance company ends up shaping your treatment, not your therapist. We'd rather spend a full hour on you. Our care coordinator will go over your options for ongoing care when they call.

How quickly will I see results?

We focus on getting you better, faster. Because you get dedicated one-on-one time, most patients notice a real difference, like less pain on stairs or easier mornings, within 3 to 4 weeks of following their personalized plan. Many feel some relief after the very first visit.

How often will I need treatment?

It depends on whether the problem is new or has been building for years. The best way to know is the assessment. Long-standing knee pain usually takes more visits because the body has built up compensations along the way, and we'll be upfront with you about that.

What is regenerative shockwave therapy?

A non-invasive treatment that uses sound waves to stimulate healing in stubborn tendons and tissue around the knee. Sessions are short, there's no downtime, and side effects are limited to mild discomfort at the site. It's included in your first visit, so you'll experience it at the assessment, not weeks later.
